Sound is a Spirit 2: Sound as a Tool
Sound is not just a spiritual force—it’s a tool that has shaped destinies and influenced communities throughout history. In the Bible, we see this principle clearly when King Nebuchadnezzar commanded everyone to bow to his golden image at the sound of music:
“At the time when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre and all kinds of music, you shall fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.”(Daniel 3:5)
Nebuchadnezzar didn’t rely on threats alone; he understood that music could create an atmosphere that would sway people’s hearts, turning sound into a powerful tool of manipulation and control. Despite the influence of that sound in his kingdom, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow because they knew that not every sound is of God or from God. They understood that sound carries a spirit and only sounds aligned with God’s purpose should guide their lives.
Sound was also used as a divine tool for victory at the battle of Jericho, where God instructed Joshua to have the people march around the city while priests blew trumpets. On the seventh day, their unified shout brought the walls of Jericho down:
“So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets… and the wall fell down flat.”(Joshua 6:20)
Similarly, King Jehoshaphat faced overwhelming armies and didn’t rely on swords but on worship. When they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes and delivered them:
“And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.”(2 Chronicles 20:22)
In Gideon’s battle against the Midianites, God used the sound of trumpets and broken pitchers to confuse and scatter the enemy:
“And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers… and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.”(Judges 7:20–21)
These examples show how sound has always been a tool—either to build up in alignment with God’s plan or to manipulate and control for selfish ends.
Today, that same power of sound continues to shape lives and societies. Music and sounds don’t merely entertain, they can create nepotism, stir up tribalism, fuel anger, or even incite sexual desires. The chants of a political rally can entrench favoritism and division. The rhythms of a song can inflame hidden passions or spark aggression. Even in our daily lives, the sounds we let in can define social boundaries—shaping who we accept, who we exclude, and how we treat each other.Sound is never neutral, it carries a spirit and becomes a tool in the hands of those who wield it. That’s why it’s so important to guard what we hear, because the sounds we allow in today will shape not only our thoughts but also the world around us tomorrow.
